Technical Joinery Designer - Berkshire - negotiable (V03751)

This manufacturer creates joinery pieces for some of the finest and advanced commercial interiors being designed in the UK today. Operating nationwide from their factory and offices just outside London, they offer total management of joinery packages, from initial site survey through to installation.

They are currently seeking an experienced Technical Designer to work with their progressive team of designers and makers.

Objectives / Requirements:

  • Creating concept designs, rendering in KeyShot and turning them into ready-to-manufacture technical drawings for the in-house joinery workshop
  • Producing complete and checked technical drawings using Solid Edge 3D design software (Fluency in SolidWorks will be considered)
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Accuracy in take offs for CNC milling and other outsourced material production will also be required directly from the CAD drawings
  • Connecting with joiners to discuss and get feedback on the practicality of joinery items designed, so hands-on experience from the joinery sector is needed and hands-on knowledge of manufacturing and assembling would be desirable
  • A genuine interest in the marketplace and a willingness to take part in interdepartmental discussions

Competitive remuneration and paid over-time. 22 days holiday increasing by 1 day every 2 years to a maximum of 25 days. Lunch is provided by the company and there is parking space on the premises.

The role of Exhibition & Display Designer is a demanding and exciting role with frequent challenges creating exciting cutting edge designs.

Main Duties include:

  • Creating detailed floor plans and technical drawings using VectorWorks
  • Producing rendered set visuals/sketches and fly-throughs where appropriate to market their cutting-edge designs
  • Being an expert in your field by volunteering innovative creative input and bespoke design ideas
  • Gathering information using available resources in order to cost out a reasonable estimated quotes
  • Contributing proactively through on-going communication, meetings etc. with all appropriate departments
  • Taking responsibility for being at the forefront of the design profession by keeping abreast of new developments in design and technology
  • Being a proactive team member engaging professionally with internal staff whilst also acting as an ambassador for the company externally

Person / Experience Required:

  • VectorWorks or equivalent, Adobe CS and a rendering package
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Good problem solving skills
  • 3+ years' experience in a similar role including some exhibition experience
  • A multi-tasker who has the ability to prioritise and manage own workload
  • A high degree of creativity with spatial awareness
  • A desire to be innovative with a positive and flexible approach to work, able to react to change quickly
  • A self-motivated, enthusiastic individual with a good sense of humour
  • Driving Licence

This company designs and makes bespoke furniture, upholstery, lighting, fabrics, wallpapers and interior necessities that add a joyful atmosphere to any interior. Their client list includes international interior designers, decorators and architects and their work can be found in many private houses, chalets and yachts around the world as well as hotels, restaurants, members clubs, boardrooms and retail spaces.

Often featured in the design press, every design is made in Britain in small workshops that excel in traditional crafts, such as iron forging, rattan weaving, chair making, precision engineering and saddlery. They also have their own range of fabrics and wallpapers.

Purpose of the Position:

Their unique selling point is that they have the ability to custom or bespoke make products to clients' needs, because they work closely with their British workshops, using traditional skills. They would like you to build relationships with these workshops and the role will involve travel to meet and work with them, ensuring drawings are accurate for manufacture.

You will need to have a passion for traditional design and support the designs with your technical knowledge, assisting in the development of new and existing designs. You will be working with the Design Manager to introduce design and production concepts working on new designs and collaborative projects generating production and technical engineering drawings using SolidWorks.

This role would really suit someone who wants to expand on their skills into furniture manufacture. Duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the product development process and engineering new designs from concept through to manufacture
  • Resolving technical detail, producing working drawings and specifications for manufacture and site installation
  • Working to implement engineering solutions to technical issues for custom and bespoke projects
  • To liaise with the workshops, interior designers and architects on creating a vision
  • Designing and testing furniture prototypes identifying and selecting materials needed for production
  • Providing technical support on new lighting designs

Person / Experience Required:

  • 3-5 years of SolidWorks experience with a furniture industry background
  • Experience within a lighting manufacturing environment would be beneficial
  • An understanding of a wide variety of manufacturing methods and processes
  • Must demonstrate familiarity with the complete design process including scale, proportion and ergonomics
  • A passion and desire for furniture design and development (rather than creative product design)
  • Be comfortable presenting information and speaking to suppliers / internal customers where necessary
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal to communicate clearly and warmly with colleagues and workshops

Currently seeking a Senior Designer, the remit will be to manage the workshops and design projects and liaise with both clients and suppliers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Taking and working on design briefs
  • Sample preparation, tracking and production

  • Sourcing and costing of materials for live projects or for quotations

Skills and experience sought:

Person / Experience Required:

  • Applicants will have studied 3D/spatial design, product or furniture design
  • At least 2 years' commercial experience (experiential, branded environments, retail, events or museum design)
  • CAD and visualisation software, along with the Adobe Creative Suite are essential, but full training will be given on the specific software packages they use (3DS Max and AutoCAD)

To help with their growth and react to their increasingly busy workload they have created a new key position of Prototyper. The main remit is to build and amend prototypes for new products being developed. This includes building prototypes from new as well as amending existing items.

Duties include constructing new Prototypes from sketches or manufacturing drawings, amending existing prototypes received from suppliers, advising on foams / webbing / construction of frame, advising on improvements with regard to design and upholstery at concept stage and providing input for value engineering.

They ideally want someone that likes a challenge and has lots of initiative as well as upholstery skills. There will be other projects apart from upholstery so they need you to be flexible also
