The Studio Design Director is a senior, hands-on creative role responsible for leading the design and development of wallpaper and fabric collections from concept through to production. Working closely with the Creative Director, the role combines creative vision with strong technical expertise in pattern design, colour, scale, repeats, substrates and digital printing.

The position involves creating original designs, developing freelance contributions, overseeing the studio design process, and ensuring all work remains true to the brand’s distinctive aesthetic and heritage. The role also includes supporting and guiding the design team, particularly the Design Development Manager, while helping shape the future structure and growth of the studio.

As the company enters a period of evolution and growth, the successful candidate will need to balance innovation with sensitivity to the brand’s history, values and identity. They should be an experienced senior designer with strong leadership skills, excellent organisation, technical confidence, and a collaborative, thoughtful approach to working across teams and with external partners.

Join the creative team at our client’s Northern Design Office designing fun and engaging products for the play and leisure industries across the UK, and internationally. Their products can be found in schools, public parks, swimming pools, soft play centres, theme parks, museums and more.

You will be taking designs from initial concept through 3D development to production ready drawings and installation documentation. Using SolidWorks you will be producing 3D assembly modelling, technical drawings, instruction creation and data management. As an Upholstery Product Developer, you’ll bring creative ideas to life - turning concepts into high-quality, commercially viable products. Collaborating with international design studios and working hands-on in the workshop, you’ll play a key role in every stage of development, from prototype to production.

What You’ll Do

• Develop and refine prototypes, testing comfort, ergonomics, and durability.
• Source, test, and evaluate upholstery materials, foams, and finishes that meet design and sustainability goals.
• Carry out upholstery work in the workshop when needed.
• Liaise with suppliers, manufacturers, and internal teams to ensure projects run smoothly from sampling through to production.
• Continuously improve existing product ranges and explore new opportunities for innovation.

About You

• Proven experience in upholstery and pattern cutting.
• Strong knowledge of upholstery construction, foams, textiles and frames.
• Practical problem-solver with a hands-on, can-do attitude.
• Excellent communication and organisational skills.
• Technical drawing or CAD skills (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar) desirable.

What’s on Offer

• Salary between £30,000 - £32,000, with room to grow.
